Merasa Origins: Tracing Java’s Ancient Wellness Traditions at Desa Potato Head

Following the success of its inaugural chapter, India: Beginning with Balance with Reema Datta, Desa Potato Head is continuing its Merasa Origins series this September with its second chapter, Java: Entering Depth, taking place from 10-13 September 2026.

A three-part exploration of the cultural roots behind Bali’s wellness traditions, Merasa Origins traces a historical journey from India to Java and, ultimately, Bali. Across three four-day immersions, the series brings together practitioners and cultural voices to explore how philosophy, ritual and physical practice have travelled across generations and evolved through different places.

At the heart of the programme is merasa, the Indonesian word for “to feel”. At Desa Potato Head, this philosophy is reflected in an approach to well-being that is experienced rather than prescribed, bringing together movement, meditation, breathwork, traditional therapies, plant-based healing and sound practices.

The Java chapter turns its attention to the introspective traditions of ancient Jawadwipa. Guided by Tantric priest Pak Sugeng and spiritual anthropologist Serj Hunt, the four-day programme draws from Hindu-Buddhist Tantra and Javanese Kebatinan, exploring teachings and rituals passed down through sacred lineages.

Participants will move through morning practices, Javanese dance, collective mantras and workshops exploring Tattwa Tutur, the three forms of Broto and the principles of Right Relationship. Rituals including Yadnya, Upacara and a Tolak Balak ceremony offer deeper insight into Javanese approaches to devotion, protection and spiritual balance.

Rather than presenting these traditions as isolated techniques, Merasa Origins invites participants to experience them as interconnected systems shaped by history, place and community. The journey will conclude in Bali this November, completing the series and returning to the island where these layered traditions continue to shape contemporary approaches to well-being.
